Stress? What Stress? How to Keep Calm and Enjoy the Most Hectic Time of Year – The Holidays
The
holiday season is here, and like every year, it seems to have arrived
earlier than the year before. Which means all those holiday errands
and shopping we’ve been putting off because they’re
still months away can be postponed no longer. Not only does gift
shopping, card sending and family meal planning consume every extra
minute of our day, let’s not forget all those holiday parties!
The holidays are a hectic time of year—there's no way around
that. But that doesn't mean you have to dread December.

Though
it can be overwhelming, look around and take notice of all that
is at your fingertips to help in preparing for this busy season.
If you find yourself short on time with a few gifts left to buy,
hop online and chances are you are not too late to order that perfect
gift. Most businesses offer special holiday deliveries, sometimes
in as few as one to two days and as late as a few days before Christmas.
Or, use your lunch break and get out of the office for a breath
of fresh air and run your errands nearby in downtown, rather than
your usual stores near your home.
Employers
can also make the season a little easier to handle by offering employees
ways to control, manage and eliminate holiday stress. According
to human resources consultant Susan Heathfield, companies can provide
tokens of appreciation, such as bringing food to work for a holiday
feast, reducing hours the week before Christmas so employees can
run errands, providing child care, giving the annual or quarterly
bonus during the holidays and encouraging casual dress to promote
a more relaxed atmosphere.
Though it is easy to get caught up in the stress of this hectic
time of year, why not go for a walk, enjoy the holiday lights and
remind yourself of the true meaning of the holidays? This may be
different for everyone, but the bottom line is the true meaning
of the holidays is not trying to have the biggest, best light display
in our yard, maxing out credit cards to buy the biggest gift or
impressing others at our office holiday party.
Take the advice of professionals like Jan Dore, a certified life
coach, and bring your holidays back to the basics —you and
your family will be much happier and you are guaranteed to celebrate
the best holiday season ever!
