Side by Side:
Living and Working Downtown

When Shan Kumar relocated from the East coast to downtown Bellevue, he knew no one. Today, only three years later, he is a successful financial advisor for the Bellevue branch of Merrill Lynch.

Given that financial and wealth management is a profession based largely on relationships, some might find moving to a new city to be an overwhelming undertaking.Kumar, however, embraced the challenge.

Choosing to make his home only a few blocks from his office so he can walk between the two means he has become a recognizable face among Bellevue’s business community. And being recognized is the first, and most important, step to building those personal relationships required to be a successful financial advisor.

“I work many late nights, either at the office or entertaining clients, and it takes away the pressure of working late to know my commute is only a block or two,” Kumar says with a smile. “When my work day is done, I don’t face an hour-long commute, instead, I am home in 10 minutes.”

Such a scenario is exactly what Kumar envisioned when he chose to move to downtown Bellevue rather than Seattle. “Downtown Bellevue provides the small-town feel I was looking for, with the wide range of offerings I needed to be successful.”

Kumar also appreciates the variety of entertainment options that exist on the Eastside. An avid wine connoisseur, Dale Carnegie graduate and bridge player, he enjoys entertaining clients with his knowledge at various local restaurants including Daniel’s Broiler, Chutney’s and the Harbor Club.

“I am passionate about my work because I am able to mix business and pleasure, which means I am not always tied behind my desk,” he says. Though he does blur the lines between work and entertainment, Kumar also finds time to enjoy all that Bellevue has to offer, and can be seen strolling in Bellevue’s Downtown Park on a sunny weekend afternoon.

“My number one priority is that my clients know I am accessible at all times,” Kumar states. “Living so close to my office makes this not only possible, but very convenient, for both myself and my clients.”
