Urban Living: Living, Working and Having Fun in Downtown Bellevue

For Robert Glover, Ph.D, moving his office and home from the Federal Way and Tacoma area to downtown Bellevue was like walking through an open door.

"I haven't regretted the move for one day," he explained. "I always wanted to live in an urban area but never thought of Bellevue that way. I thought of New York, San Francisco, Seattle or Vancouver. But now that I am here, I realize that downtown Bellevue offers an urban lifestyle."

For Dr. Glover, a licensed marriage and family therapist, and author of No More Mr. Nice Guy, working and living in downtown Bellevue led to a welcome surprise. He only fills up his car every five to six weeks. "I walk to work and I love it," he said.

Indeed, Dr. Glover walks everywhere - to work, to work out, to dinner and to the movies. His ultimate goal would be to live without a car. He often takes a Sound Transit express bus to Seattle for a Mariners game or to meet friends. He can also easily walk to the new cinema at Lincoln Square.

Dr. Glover treasures the Bellevue Downtown Park and Meydenbauer Park (though he'd like to keep this spot a secret). Last summer he took in the Bellevue Philharmonic while watching the Symetra Bellevue Family 4th fireworks display from his deck. He also had fun watching the marathon as runners crossed the finish line right outside his window.

One other thing Dr. Glover has noticed, "I'm not depressed about the rain. I think it's because I walk to work and am not sitting in my car, in the rain, in traffic. I just put up my umbrella and I'm at work in less than four minutes." So the next time you're sitting in traffic in the rain … think of Dr. Glover and his short, two block commute to work.
